Regional Excellence Award: Poplar Hall
I LOVE to document the success of others. From the moment you pull up in the parking lot or walk up along the river walking path, to the moment you step inside- it is clear that Poplar Hall is a huge success for the teams that envisioned and created it. I have so much respect for Engberg Anderson Architects and C.D. Smith Construction for what they have accomplished - They both deserve all the awards and recognition they are getting from this gem of a project as well as the many other fantastic projects they are crafting!

When I was sent to photograph the newly completed Poplar Hall project, the word “Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT)” was new to me - but one look at Poplar Hall and the value of CLT immediately spoke for itself. The expansive gathering space is beautiful and modern and feels like it is made entirely of wood and glass. It would be perfect for concerts, weddings, religious gatherings, or community forums.

Architects chose wood for this multi-use venue because they wanted a distinctive yet versatile space that could be configured for a variety of events, including weddings, receptions, conferences and concerts. The two-story contemporary design features cross-laminated timber (CLT) floor panels, exposed glulam columns and beams, and tongue-and-groove structural roof decking. On the exterior, a dramatic, sloped roof cantilevers to provide shaded outdoor areas. Inside, an open staircase leads to the main event space, where 25-foot floor-to-ceiling windows offer views of the Fox River. Having been tasked to appeal to diverse groups of people for many purposes, Poplar Hall demonstrates that good design can achieve multiple goals when driven by considerations for the human experience and thoughtful materiality. 8,400 sf / Type V-B construction
