Erin + Jesse's Sikh Wedding (E+J Part 2 of 3)!
Erin + Jesse’s Wedding celebration spanned three days and two cultures. This post covers their ceremony at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin. This was my first Sikh Wedding, so I had to do a little research to understand the elements. Here are some of the highlights:
Gurdwara - Sikh Place of Worship
The Baraat - a Wedding parade marking the arrival of the groom. If you are imagining drums and dancing and often a horse - you have the right idea!
Milni - The formal introduction of the families that happens when the Groom arrives.
Anand Karaj - “Ceremony of Joy” - Everyone enters the gurdwara where the Bride and Groom sit in front of the canopy housing the Holy Scripture for Sikhs (the Guru Granth Sahib)
The Laavan - Part of the Ceremony where the Bride and Groom are bound together, with the groom leading them with his sword around the Canopy with the Holy Book once for each of the official prayers
Karah Prasad: A holy sweet treat is offered to guests toward the end of the Ceremony.
Lots of eating together! The food was incredible!
Now you have specific cool things to look for as you scroll through their images. I love so many things about Jesse and Erin’s Wedding weekend: the fabulous cultural elements, the food, the outfits, their incredible families, and crazy cool friends - It was a blast to spend three days with the couple and the whole mass of celebrating people who surrounded them. I can’t wait to share the other parts soon!
